Edward Jaffee Abes
Ed Abes, the managing shareholder of ABES BAUMANN, first begin practicing law in 1969. He is a 1965 graduate of Penn State University and a 1969 graduate of Duquesne University School of Law, where he was President of the Student Bar Association. His first position as an attorney was with the State Workers' Insurance Fund. In 1978 he decided that the injured worker was his primary concern and established his own firm. For over thirty-five (35) years, he has represented only injured workers. Admitted to practice in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, he helps workers on both the trial and appellate levels. Ed is a member of the Workers' Compensation Panels of the National Football League Players' Association, the National Hockey League Players Association, and the Professional Hockey Players Association representing injured professional athletes.
Ed's memberships also include the Allegheny County Bar Association (Fee Dispute Committee, Workers' Compensation Section, and a Trustee, Allegheny County Bar Foundation Loans and Scholarship Fund); the Pennsylvania Bar Association (Workers' Compensation Section, Chair 2001-2002; and Sports and Entertainment Law Committee); the Pennsylvania Association for Justice (Workers' Compensation Section, Past Co-Chair); the Workers Injury and Law Advocacy Group (sustaining member); the American Civil Liberties Union (Pittsburgh Chapter, President 2000 to 2005); and Treasurer, Allegheny County Democratic Committee 2006-2011.
In 2011, Ed was elected to the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI). He has been listed as one of the top 5% of lawyers in Pennsylvania by Super Lawyers Magazine since 2004. Super Lawyers has also listed him as one of the Top 50 Lawyers in Pittsburgh. In addition he has been recognized continuously since 2004 by Best Lawyers in America as Pittsburgh's Best Workers Compensation Lawyer. He was also recognized as Professional Hockey Players Association Workers' Compensation Panel Attorney of the Year 2010 and the National Football League Players Association Workers' Compensation Panel Attorney of the Year in 1993.
