Veterans Benefits

Do You Need Assistance With Veterans Benefits?

You applied for veterans benefits, only to find yourself in a drawn out battle with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Perhaps you were successful in getting benefits, only to receive a letter from the VA threatening to reduce them.

At Abes Baumann, we are committed to helping Iraq war veterans and all other veterans in Pittsburgh and throughout western Pennsylvania. We have been standing up for the rights of disabled veterans since 1990. We know the steps to take to help our servicemen and women get the benefits they are entitled to.

Service-Connected and Non-Service-Connected Disabilities

The first step is to show whether the disability claim is for a service-connected or non-service-connected medical condition. While this may seem obvious, the VA may challenge it. Our attorneys know how to show that a disability is service-connected.

If a disability is non-service-connected, we can assist veterans with the pension benefits that may be available.

Showing Percentage of Disability

The biggest conflict in veterans benefits cases involves what is called the percentage of disability. The VA rates disabilities. This rating determines the amount of benefits paid. Unfortunately, when determining percentage of disability, certain issues are often overlooked. For example, a veteran may have suffered an orthopedic injury in an explosion. They VA may recognize this injury and issue a disability rating of 20 percent.

Unfortunately, they may overlook related issues, such as a secondary medical condition or a mental condition like post-traumatic stress disorder. These related issues could significantly increase the disability rating, and thus the amount of veterans benefits paid.

Our lawyers take great care to see that veterans are given the appropriate disability rating. We work hard to see that they get the benefits they have earned while serving our country.
